I just purchased my first Tivo (Premiere XL4) last Saturday. Installed the cablecard I picked up from Comcast and surprisingly got it paired/activated with only having to talk to two Comcast reps (I consider that pretty lucky based on what I've read). The Tivo seems to be working flawlessly.
One of my main goals was to be able to record shows and transfer them to my PC for editing and converting to other formats. I've used VideoReDo for several years with H.264 source files (Hauppage HDPVR, Silicon Dust HD Homerun, Blu-Ray Rips, etc). I also knew that VideoReDo supported .tivo files so I was anxious to try them out. I spent many hours reading about pyTivo and kmttg. I ultimately installed both and set them up. I've been successful in setting up some media shares with pyTivo and pushing some mp4 files to the Tivo which have played fine (SD files though). Tonight I tried my first pull from the Tivo using pyTivo of a recorded broadcast show (Modern Family). The pull completed successfully but I found I couldn't open the .tivo file in VideoReDo (or WMP) since I had not installed Tivo Desktop (so it couldn't find my MAK). I downloaded Tivo Desktop, installed it, and viola - both VRD and WMP played the .tivo file beautifully. So far, so good.
Next I tried a straight recode from VRD. I chose to output to H.264 (mp4) from VRD. In the options I left the audio encoding at "Automatic". The recode completed and I went to play the resulting mp4 file. I was unpleasantly surprised when WMP played the file as there was no audio. I then played the mp4 with VLC and it played fine. When the file was playing in VLC I checked the audio track and it only showed one (track 1). I also used MediaInfo to look at the mp4 file and it showed AC-3 6 channels for the audio (again a single track). Any ideas why I am not getting audio through WMP? As an aside, I can play other files in WMP with AC-3 audio fine (though they are .m2ts not .mp4). When I look at the .tivo source file with MediaInfo I can't determine the audio codec used so not sure if that comes into play or not.
The other thing I noticed is the source appears to be 1280x720. I don't know why, but I was thinking ABC was broadcasting 1080 not 720. Could I have something incorrectly set on the Tivo to record 720 instead of 1080?
I haven't yet tried to push the recoded file back to the Tivo or attempt to play it from my media server. Just noted the lack of audio in WMP.
Anyone have any suggestions or comments to help me?
